Pro tip: The key to getting frozen tripod feet off of the ice without ripping the rubber off the bottoms is lots of hot water and a hammer.

Here I am on the ice with producer Jenni Cho and Mike Eruzione, the man who scored the game winning goal in the famous hockey game against the Russians in the 1980 Olympics known as "the miracle on ice."On the ice with Mike Eruzione, the man who scored the game winning goal in the famous hockey game against the Russians in the 1980 Olympics known as "the miracle on ice."

This was part of a spot promoting Winthrop, known to locals as Winthrop by the Sea. See the finished piece below.

Winthrop is a coastal town right next to Boston. With a rich history and beautiful coastline on a peninsula, the Town of Winthrop provides services to its residents and business owners via road maintenance, public safety services (Police & Fire), and other municipal services including Public Health, Inspectional Services, and staff support for volunteer committees. Winthrop has a small-town feel and tight-knit community with the convenience of being near a big city and Logan Airport. The Town has an “Open for Business” philosophy that has buy-in from the Council and the Town Staff. Winthrop is a great place to live and work and has something for everyone.

A Lot of Hats

Wore a lot of hats at TEDxPortsmouth: Point Of No Return at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH.

Wore a lot of hats at TEDxPortsmouth: Point Of No Return at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH.

The event was described like this:

“Samuel Beckett wrote: ‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’ So, go on. Discover your point of no return.
And then come to TEDxPortsmouth on Sept. 13
at the Music Hall in Portsmouth to find out
how our speakers navigated uncharted territories. Come find out what they learned, what they can tell
you, and why their ideas are worth spreading.”

It did not disappoint. You can watch the speakers here:

Green screen shoots with monitors pose their own special challenges.

DPing a green screen studio shoot. A discussion by two doctors for a pharmaceutical company.

Green screen shoots with monitors pose their own special challenges.

Most monitors are ~6500-7000 Kelvin. For this shoot, I saw them as big blue light sources that I was going to have to deal with on the set. Thanks to modern technology (LEDs), it was easy to light the set for day light (5600 K) to compensate for the blue glow of the monitors. If any of their light did reach the subjects, it would hardly be noticeable.

Sometimes when you're using tungsten lights on a set, and someone brings their laptop on the set, you can see a blue glow on them. In that case I try to turn the brightness down as far as they can tolerate, and put some CTO gel on the monitor where / if the cameras won't see it. I've also done that with telepromters if they're too close (put a CTO gel on it to counteract its blue light on their faces).

This is all, of course, fun for me.

Paws for a Cure

It’s rare that I get to shoot symposiums with dogs in attendance. It was a good day.

Now this is my kind of event!

Apparently, the cancers that kids and dogs develop are often very similar. The Paws for a Cure Research Symposium, co-hosted by Canines-n-Kids & Merck, was held for experts to discuss the challenges and progress in researching this connection.

Busy Week!

Normally, August is pretty slow in the Boston area, but I was kept pretty busy this week.

Normally, August is pretty slow in the Boston area, but I was kept pretty busy this week.

Here I was shooting the Total Store Expo on the 7th.

On the 8th, I was waiting for Steven Tyler to appear. Did we maybe need a little more fog? His new album is country-western(!), and we got to see a sneak preview!

At Welsh's, on the 9th, I got to use my cool Edelkrone SliderPlus to shoot a new kind of product they’re making to be featured on Innovations, a Discovery Channel show. We also shot some interviews.

On the 10th, I shot a professor from Northeastern University for a story about the history of presidential debates to be featured on the New York Times' Retro Report. I’ve worked on several films for them. The rainy day clouds made for a nice, soft key light.

And on the 11th, I had fun with green screens at the Fix Your Funnel convention at the BCEC. I was very glad to be shooting inside of an overly air-conditioned convention center on a day when the heat index was over 100 degrees F outside!

I'm very happy to be heading to Martha's Vineyard for the weekend. ;-)
